December 02, 2010 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. - Four Ball State soccer student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team in Missy Gordon (Carmel, Ind./Marshall), Tina Vannatta (Powhatan, Va./Springboro), Skylar Chew (Mason, Ohio/Mason) and Brigit Reder (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West). This marks the ninth straight season Ball State has been represented on the Academic All-MAC team and four recipients matches the 2007 campaign for most BSU student-athletes honored.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Gordon, a senior midfielder, owns a 3.562 GPA in special needs education. She earned Second Team All-MAC honors this fall after finishing second on the team with seven points. She scored three goals and handed out an assist for the Cardinals who finished the year 7-10-2 overall. She led the team in shots for the second straight year as she tallied 55 this season to finish third in the conference.
Vannatta, a senior defender, boasts a 3.96 GPA in exercise science and marks the second straight season she has earned Academic All-MAC honors. She becomes the sixth Cardinal all-time to earn multiple Academic All-MAC honors joining former recipients Megan Ridley, Emily Rein, Amy Holst, Lindsay Wiltshire and Dee Nocero. She made 19 starts on the back line to help the Cardinals' post four shutouts while also scoring four points (1g, 2a) on the year.
Chew, a sophomore defender, owns a 4.0 GPA in psychology. She was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team this season. She played in all 19 games on the Cardinals' defense and helped Ball State post four shutouts on the season. She tallied her second career point against IUPUI, as she handed out an assist on the game-winning goal.
Reder, a sophomore defender, has a 3.90 GPA in special education. She started all 19 games for the Cardinals on defense and was one of the top defenders in the MAC as she helped BSU post four shutouts. She finished fourth on the team in scoring with six points (3g) and led all Cardinal defenders in scoring. She was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week September 7 after helping the Cardinals to a road victory at Southeast Missouri.
The Academic All-MAC team is voted on by the faculty athletic representatives of the league's institution. A total of 37 student-athletes were named to the team. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
