MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University women's basketball team (3-3) fell to Big 12 Conference foe Missouri (3-3) 56-45 Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
Senior guard Ty'Ronda Benning led all scorers with 17 points on the night, which included four three pointers. Senior forward Emily Maggert, along with teammate junior center Amber Crago , each had eight points. Crago led the Cardinals with 10 rebounds plus added one block.
Maggert got the Cardinals off to a good start to open the second half with a three point basket to bring Ball State within 25-22 of the Tigers. The three pointer by Maggert moved her into seventh all-time in the Ball State's women's basketball record books with 1, 356 points, passing former teammate and director of basketball operations Audrey McDonald (2006-10) who had 1,353 career points.
Despite multiple scoring runs from the Cardinals, Ball State could not shake its early first half deficit and could only come within three points of Missouri the remainder of the game.
After trailing Missouri 10-0 in the opening minutes of the first half, Ball State got on the board after Maggert's layup in the paint. With 6:34 remaining on the clock the Tigers still had a nine point (20-11) lead over the Cardinals. Benning would then hit a three pointer, which sparked a 5-0 run for the Cardinals and brought Ball State within three (22-19) at the 3:23 mark. Missouri closed out the half with a 25-19 edge over Ball State.
The Cardinals managed only a .279 field goal percentage shooting mark, while the Tigers shot .417 from the field, but struggled with a .273 mark from three point range. Ball State's defense forced Missouri into 15 turnovers, but Missouri outrebounded the Cardinals 45-36.
The Ball State University women's basketball team begins a two-game road trip when it travels to SIU-Edwardsville Sunday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. EST.
