
Women's S&D Captures Doug Coers Invitational Title

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team continued its dominance on the second day of the 2010 Doug Coers Invitational, winning the five-team event by almost 300 points with a score of 801 at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
Marshall took home second place with 503.5 points, followed by Grand Valley State (400.5), Findlay (169) and Valparaiso (121). Of the 14 second-day events, Ball State captured wins in 11.
Maria Gramelspacher led the Cardinals second-day effort with three relay wins and an individual victory in the 200 butterfly. Bridgette Ruehl added a pair of individual wins (100 & 200 breaststroke), as well as a relay victory.
Ball State opened the second day with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Nicole Saulters, Ruehl, Gramelspacher and Katie Bylsma posted a clocking of 1:49.08.
Two events later, Haley Richter led a one-two BSU showing in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.47. Emily Wisolek followed in second at 59.04.
Jillian Bischoff and Gramelspacher followed with a one-two effort in the 200 freestyle, with times of 1:56.46 and 1:57.00, respectively.
Ruehl added her second first-place effort of the day in the 100 breaststroke, turning in a time of 1:07.01. Jackie Iglesias secured Ball State's fourth-straight win with a final wall touch of 59.56 in the 100 backstroke.
After a brief break, action continued with BSU recording a fifth-straight win (and third one-two finish) as Whitney Adams (301.01) and Christina Riordan (281.60) both posted NCAA Zone Diving Qualifying marks on the three-meter board.
Action then returned to the pool, with BSU collecting its second relay win of the day and sixth-straight overall victory, as Richter, Bischoff, Wisolek and Gramelspacher turned in a winning time of 7:53.43 in the 800 freestyle relay.
While Ball State's winning streak was broken on the next two events, the Cardinals came back strong in the 100 freestyle, with Bylsma (53.53), Bischoff (54.18) and Saulters (54.38) turning in a 1-2-3 effort.
In the next event, Ruehl collected her third first-place effort of the day, clocking a time of 2:21.47 in the 200 breaststroke.
In the meet's final individual event, Gramelspacher took home top billing in the 200 butterfly, completing the event in 2:05.81. She would follow by swimming the first leg of the first-place 400 freestyle relay, combining with Richter, Wisolek and Byslma for a time of 3:33.31.
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to action Dec. 3-4, when it heads back to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Invitational which begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday and continues at 10 a.m. Saturday.
DAY 1 RECAP
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team has a 83.5 lead after the first six events of the 2010 Doug Coers Invitational hosted by the Cardinals at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
The Cardinals opened the two-day, five team meet with event wins in five events. Following Ball State on the scoreboard is Marshall (149.5), Grand Valley State (130.5), Valparaiso (47) and Findlay (40).
Ball State opened the meet with 1.37 second victory in the 200 freestyle, as Jennifer Miles, Betsy Bowen, Mallory Przybylinski and Katie Bylsma combined for a time of 1:38.61.
Emily Wisolek followed with a first-place showing in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 5:09.35 to top the second-place swimmer by nearly three seconds.
In the 200 IM, Haley Richter posted a final wall touch of 2:10.26 to win the event by almost a second-and-a-half.
BSU followed with a 1-2-3 finished in the 50 freestyle, led by reigning MAC Swimmer of the Week Katie Bylsma's time of 24.69. Przybylinski placed second at 24.79, while Nicole Saulters came in third at 24.81.
After a second-place showing by Christina Riordan on the one-meter diving board (268.80), the Cardinals went on to win the day's final event, the 400 medley relay. Mallory Miles, Bridgette Ruehl, RIchter and Bylsma finished the event with a time of 3:57.44.
Action in the seventh-annual Doug Coers Invitational continues at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming & diving team looks to continue its early-season success this weekend when it hosts the seventh annual Doug Coers Invitational at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
The two-day event, which runs Friday and Saturday, features the Cardinals, Butler, Grand Valley State, Findlay, Marshall and Valparaiso.
The event is named after the late Doug Coers (1967-1997), who was a four-year member of the Ball State men's swimming and diving program from 1986-1989. From 1992-1993, Coers was a coach for the Catalina Swim Club, the Cardinal Swim Club, the Muncie Central High School Girls' Swim Team and assistant coach of the BSU women's swimming and diving program. The following four years, Coers coached the Dynamo Swim Club in Atlanta, Ga.
The 2010 Doug Coers Invitational gets underway Friday at 6 p.m. with the 200 freestyle relay and is followed in succession by the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving (women), 3-meter diving (men) and the 400 medley relay.
Saturday's competition is divided into three sessions with the first beginning at 9 a.m. The order of events for Saturday's first session include the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and 800 freestyle relay.
The second session of the day, beginning at 1 p.m., is highlighted by the women's 3-meter diving and the men's 1-meter diving events. The meet concludes with the 3 p.m. session, featuring the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle.
