Grossnickle Has Career Day In Win Over WSU

The Cardinals were led by forward Emily Maggert who earned her 23rd career double-double after scoring 20 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Junior forward Suzanne Grossnickle had a career best day with 16 points and nine rebounds. Grossnickle also went 2-for-2 from behind the arc.
For the game Ball State outrebounded the Raiders 46-to-39, which included 17 offensive rebounds to WSU's 11.
Wright State started off strong after scoring the first basket, the Raiders went on a 5-0 run to take an early 8-3 advantage over the Cardinals. Ball State led once the entire first half 11-10 at the 13:53 mark off of a layup from Maggert. Down 11 (28-17) with just over five minutes remaining in the first period, the Cardinals put together a 7-0 run which was sparked by free throws from Maggert. A combination of back-to-back three pointers from freshman guard Brandy Woody and senior guard Ty'Ronda Benning along with rebounding, layups and free throws from Grossnickle knotted the game 31-31 at the half.
Ball State came out of the gates strong in the second half putting together a 7-0 run to go up 38-31 over Wright State. After several scoring spurts from both teams the game was tied again 50-50 with 7:30 left in the contest.
Both teams traded baskets the remainder of the second half, with 4:56 on the clock freshman forward Jazmin Hitchens had a fast break layup sparking a 4-0 run for Ball State that gave them the 60-56 advantage over WSU. The Cardinals led 64-63 with 19 seconds left, Wright State had the ball but missed its layup at the other end of the court, defensively the Cardinals managed to hold onto the ball as time expired.
The Ball State University women's basketball team will play its first road game of the season when it travels to Detroit Mercy Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff in Calihan Hall.
