October 22, 2010 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State soccer team battled back-and-forth with one of the top teams in the Mid-American Conference Friday afternoon before dropping a 1-0 double overtime contest to Eastern Michigan at the BSU Soccer Field. The loss drops the Cardinals to 6-9-2 overall and 0-7-2 in MAC play while the Eagles improve to 9-5-4 overall and 6-0-3 in league action.
"Today was one of the best performances our team has had all year long," head coach Craig Roberts said. "For the first time this season we played a whole game tactically how we wanted to and really surprised Eastern Michigan."
Ball State and EMU went toe-to-toe in the tight contest as the Cardinals held a 22-17 lead in shots for the game, including a 10-7 edge in the first half. Eastern Michigan had a strong chance to open the scoring early in the second half as Paige Sheridan came open from 10 yards out but freshman goalkeeper Layne Schramm (The Colony, Texas/The Colony) was able to smother the shot to keep the game scoreless.
Schramm came up big again in the 73rd minute of play as Sheridan got behind the BSU defense. Schramm forced her into a quick shot on the breakaway as she charge out from her line causing the ball to trickle past the outside post.
Eastern Michigan appeared to win the game in the 90th minute of action as Stephanie Janssens shot rang off the far post. Chelsea Detrick ran onto the rebound and deposited into the net, but was ruled offside on the play as the clock wound down to close out regulation.
Ball State had its best shot to score in the first overtime. Sophomore forward Paige Stroinski (Granger, Ind./Penn) made a run down the right side and sent a cross into the box six yards out. Sophomore Maggie Brown (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) made a run and just missed a header that would have tallied the game-winning goal.
Eastern Michigan found the back of the net in the 102nd minute of play. Sheridan was sent in behind the BSU defense but sophomore defender Brigit Reder (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) was able to make a slide tackle to jar the ball loose. Sheridan was able to poke the ball back into the box where Cara Cutaia struck it into an open net for the 1-0 victory.
Schramm finished the game with three saves in the loss for the Cardinals while EMU goalkeeper Monique Budani tallied eight saves. The Cardinals were led offensively by senior Missy Gordon (Carmel, Ind./Marshall) who posted six shots while Stroinski finished the afternoon with five shots.
The loss eliminates the Cardinals from contention for the MAC Tournament. Ball State will return to action Sunday afternoon as it hosts MAC West Division co-leader Central Michigan at 1 p.m.
