KENT, Ohio - The Ball State soccer team closed out the road portion of the 2010 schedule Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 loss at Mid-American Conference foe Kent State. The loss drops the Cardinals to 6-8-2 overall and 0-6-2 in MAC play while the Golden Flashes improve to 2-9-4 overall and 1-6-1 in league play.
Ball State opened the scoring quickly as it took a 1-0 lead just 4:30 into the contest. Sophomore Paige Stroinski (Granger, Ind./Penn) sent a ball to the top of the 18-yard box where senior midfielder Cortney Coombs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) ran onto the ball at the same time as KSU goalkeeper Kelly Sherwood. Coombs was able to poke the ball over to redshirt sophomore Sarah Orisich (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) who ripped a shot from 18 yards out into the empty net for her team-leading four goal of the year.
Kent State came back and found the equalizer in the 22nd minute of play. Sara Henderson ripped a shot from 20 yards out that beat freshman goalkeeper Layne Schramm (The Colony, Texas/The Colony) to tie the game at 1-1.
The Golden Flashes turned some late offense into two goals in the closing minutes of the opening frame as they scored in the 39th and 45th minute of play to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room. Kellyn Flanagan scored from 15 yards out while Jessacca Gironda tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season off of a header.
Kent State took advantage of a BSU miscue in the 73rd minute to take a 4-1 lead as the Cardinals scored an own goal off a KSU corner kick. The Golden Flashes finished the game out-shooting the Cardinals 17-10, including 13-4 in the first half. Schramm tallied seven saves in 90 minutes of action in the loss while Sherwood notched five saves in the win.
Ball State closes out the regular season with three straight home games beginning Friday afternoon. The Cardinals will host Eastern Michigan at 3 p.m. at the BSU Soccer Field.
