MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University football team (2-5, 1-2 MAC) lost 41-38 to Eastern Michigan (1-6, 1-3 MAC) Saturday afternoon at Scheumann Stadium in overtime.
"We were beat up front," Ball State head coach Stan Parrish says. "We got what we deserved. We had our chances in the first half to put that game away. We are not good enough to do that yet. It comes down to blocking and tackling. We did neither."
The Cardinals defense held the Eagles scoreless in the first quarter. EMU had two field goal attempts but missed both. Ball State's defense was led by Tony Martin with four tackles and Travis Freeman had three.
Ball State managed to take the early 7-0 lead with 5:25 left in the first quarter after quarterback Keith Wenning connected on a 24-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Daniel Ifft. The touchdown by Ifft was his first of the season and seventh of his career. The scoring drive was setup by cornerback Koreen Burch after he recovered Eastern Michigan's fumbled punt. The fumble recovery marked Burch's first of his career.
With 12:07 in the second quarter Wenning recorded his first rushing touchdown off of the quarterback sneak to give Ball State a 14-0 edge over the Eagles.
On EMU's ensuing possession, safety Sean Baker tallied his 14th career interception and fourth of the season on the Eagles first play. The interception set up an 8-yard touchdown pass from Wenning to tailback MiQuale Lewis increasing Ball State's cushion to 21-0. Baker is now tied for the school record for interceptions with Mike Lecklider (1973-76) and Shafer Suggs (1972-75) with 14.
At the 2:54 mark in the second quarter, Eric Williams had a 92-yard kickoff return which was the first of his career making the score 28-7, Ball State. The last time the Cardinals returned a kickoff for a touchdown was Oct. 6, 2007 versus Central Michigan when Dante Love returned the ball for 100-yards.
Before the half the Eagles made it a 28-14 ball game. Eastern Michigan would score on its first two possessions to open the second half tying the ball game, 28-28 with 5:23 left on the clock. The Eagles would take their first lead of the game 35-28 with 4:41 remaining in the contest after quarterback Alex Gillett rushed for two yards into the end zone.
With 34 second left in regulation, Wenning completed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Briggs Orsbon to send the game into overtime.
In overtime Ian McGarvey kicked a 44-yard field goal to put Ball State up 38-35 but Eastern Michigan would score a touchdown on its possession to win the ball game.
