Emily Karwoski Named MAC Swimmer Of The Week
January 19, 2010 | Women's Swimming and Diving
MUNCIE, Ind. - - After leading the Ball State women's swimming & diving team to a thrilling come-from-behind victory at Illinois State last Saturday, senior swimmer Emily Karwoski (Zionsville, Ind./North Central H.S.) has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week.
"What a deserving award for a hard-working and outstanding senior," said Ball State head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill. "Emily has been a true leader for this team with her intense work ethic. She is the type of individual who will not let an injury ruin her senior year, as she has battled back from a serious shoulder injury to be one of the key components for our program."
Karwoski is the fourth different Ball State women's swimmer to earn the league's top weekly honors in the last five voting periods, joining Nov. 24 winner sophomore Elizabeth Spilman (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.), Dec. 15 honoree junior Katie Bylsma (Westfield, Ind./Pinckney H.S.) and Jan. 12 selection senior Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.).
In last Saturday's meet at Illinois State, Karwoski led Ball State to one of the biggest come-from-behind victories in program history by scoring three first-place finishes in the Cardinals 154-146 win. With the Cardinals trailing by 30 points (52-22) after the first four events, Karwoski came through with a momentum-changing first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.31), topping ISU's top swimmer by 1.74 seconds.
Later in the meet, Karwoski gave Ball State a 105-102 advantage when she took home top billing in the 200 breaststroke. Her season-best time of 2:24.76 was 5.87 seconds faster than the Redbirds' top swimmer.
However, the hosts would regain the lead entering the final two events. This time, a win by Karwoski in the 200 individual medley (an event she holds the BSU school-record in) gave the Cardinals the advantage for good, as she finished in 2:11.50, 1.65 seconds faster than ISU's second-place swimmer. Karwoski also swam the second leg for the 200 medley relay which posted a time of 1:50.97.
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team looks to carry over the momentum from last weekends' victory when it travels to MAC rival Eastern Michigan for a 1 p.m. swim Saturday. On Sunday, the Cardinals will travel to North Central High School in Indianapolis for a five-team meet hosted by Butler, which also includes Eastern Illinois, Youngstown State and Valparaiso.
