
Women's Basketball Tallies 73-69 Win Over Toledo

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball defeated Mid-American Conference West Division leader Toledo, 73-69, Sunday afternoon in Worthen Arena. With the victory the Cardinals improved to 9-8 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Rockets fall to 13-4 and 3-1 in the MAC.
Ball State and Toledo played a close contest for 40 minutes. The second half was a seesaw battle as both teams traded baskets the majority of the second half.
The Rockets took the biggest lead of the second period, 54-50, at the 5:59 mark. Ball State tied the contest, 54-54, with 5:17 left on the clock.
The Cardinals took the lead for good at the 2:23 mark after Emily Maggert nailed a three pointer to give Ball State a 62-60 lead. Ball State would increase the lead to as much as four points four more times before the final margin.
With 30 seconds left in the contest, a Toledo three pointer closed the gap to 68-67. Ball State's Audrey McDonald responded with a pair of free throws with 25 seconds remaining to give the Cardinals a 70-67 advantage. A free throw by Ty'Ronda Benning with 13 seconds left gave Ball State a 71-67 edge.
Toledo cut the lead to 71-69 with eight seconds remaining, but McDonald responded with another pair of free throws with six seconds left to win the game for the Cardinals.
Maggert ended the game with 24 points and 13 rebounds, while McDonald tallied 20 points, four assists and two rebounds. Benning pitched in 18 points and six assists for the Cardinals.
McDonald made 5-of-8 field goals in game, including 4-of-7 from three point range. Maggert was 9-of-14 field goals, including all four from three point range.
Ball State made its first run in the opening minutes of the game after a Maggert layup with 16:36 on the clock. The 8-0 run allowed the Cardinals to take a 12-2 edge over the Rockets with 14:27 remaining in the first half.
Toledo quickly answered back with an 8-0 run of its own after guard Clare Aubry knocked down back-to-back three pointers which helped the Rockets come within 12-10 of the Cardinals.
The Rockets took its first lead of the game (15-14) with 8:46 remaining in the first period. Toledo held onto its lead until McDonald hit one from behind the arc to tie the game 26-26 with 2:25 left on the clock.
McDonald managed a three pointer with 27 seconds left to give the Cardinals a 31-26 halftime edge over the Rockets.
