MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State women's swimming & diving senior Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) has been named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 4-10, 2010, as announced today by the league office. She splits the award with Central Michigan women's basketball player Kaihla Szunko.
Kehe, who owns a 3.88 grade-point average as an exercise science major, earns the honor after helping guide the Cardinals to a first-place finish at last Saturday's Ball State Relay Invitational, in which she was a member of four winning relays. A member of the Ball State cross country and track & field teams as well, Kehe was also named the MAC Women's Swimmer of the Week after her performance last weekend.
"Sarah has outstanding athletic achievements which are accompanied by exceptional academic success," said Ball State head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill. "To be a three-sport athlete and maintain a 3.88 GPA is phenomenal."
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the previous week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the league's faculty athletic representatives.
Kehe opened the Ball State Relay Invitational by swimming the anchor leg for the first-place 300 butterfly relay that touched the wall in 2:58.62. Her second victory came when she led off the 800 freestyle relay which clocked in at 7:57.92. Her 300 butterfly relay won the race by 10.94 seconds, while the 800 freestyle relay finished 20.16 seconds ahead of the competition.
Kehe went on to swim the third leg, which was 150 yards, for the 500 freestyle relay which combined for a time of 4:50.50. Her final relay victory came in the 400 medley relay, when she swam the second leg of the relay which finished in 4:18.30. Her 500 freestyle relay won by 9.74 seconds and the 400 medley relay won by 7.49 seconds.
Kehe is the second Ball State women's swimmer to earn the honor, as sophomore Elizabeth Spilman (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) picked up the award for the week beginning Nov. 30.
