S&D Sweeps MAC Weekly Awards For Third Time

MUNCIE, Ind. - - After swimming on four first-place relays each at last weekend's Ball State Relay Invitational, men's senior swimmer Ben Battjes (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial H.S.) and women's senior swimmer Sarah Kehe (Westville, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) have been named the Mid-American Conference Swimmers of the Week.
This is the third time this season, and second straight voting period, the Cardinals have swept the league's weekly awards. Overall, BSU's male swimmers have won the last four MAC Swimmer of the Week awards, while BSU's female swimmers have captured three of the last four honors.
Battjes, who also earned MAC Swimmer of the Week accolades on Nov. 24, helped guide the men's squad to a first-place finish at the Ball State Relay Invitational by swimming the first leg for four winning relays. In the first race of the day, Battjes was the first of three swimmers who combined for a time of 2:39.06 to win the 300 butterfly relay. His second victory came in the 500 freestyle relay, when he swam the 50 freestyle leg for the relay that clocked in at 4:20.65. His 300 butterfly relay won by 7.14 seconds and the 500 freestyle relay won by 5.14 seconds.
Battjes swam his second-straight 50 freestyle when he opened for the 200 freestyle relay that combined for a time of 1:28.05. He rounded out the competition by swimming the first 100 yards in the 400 medley relay which posted a time of 3:44.78. His 200 freestyle relay won by 5.09 seconds and the 400 medley relay won by 11.61 seconds.
Kehe helped guide the women's squad to a first-place finish at the Ball State Relay Invitational by swimming a leg in four winning relays. She opened the meet by swimming the anchor leg for the first-place 300 butterfly relay that touched the wall in 2:58.62. Her second victory came when she led off the 800 freestyle relay which clocked in at 7:57.92. Her 300 butterfly relay won the race by 10.94 seconds, while the 800 freestyle relay finished 20.16 seconds ahead of the competition.
Kehe went on to swim the third leg, which was 150 yards, for the 500 freestyle relay which combined for a time of 4:50.50. Her final relay victory came in the 400 medley relay, when she swam the second leg of the relay which finished in 4:18.30. Her 500 freestyle relay won by 9.74 seconds and the 400 medley relay won by 7.49 seconds.
The Ball State men's swimming & diving team returns to competition Friday, when it travels to Purdue for a 6 p.m. showdown versus the Boilermakers. The women's team visits Illinois State Saturday for a 1 p.m. swim against the Redbirds.
