Field Hockey Suffers Loss To Villanova 4-1
September 05, 2009 | Field Hockey
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Ball State field hockey team fell to Villanova Sunday 4-1, despite logging 10 shots on goal to the Wildcats' six. The Cardinals hold a 2-2 overall record.
"This weekend was tough to come out 0-2 when you total more shots in both games," said head coach Annette Payne. "But that's something that's great about non-conference. We just need to continue to build and learn to finish on opportunities."
Sophomore defender Elizabeth Blaum (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary Prep.) posted the first goal of the game just 1:28 into action. Sophomore defender Katie Norris (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) and junior midfielder Kaitlan Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) provided the double assist off a penalty corner.
However, six minutes later Villanova's Meghan Ryan tied the game on an unassisted shot to the right side of the goal. The Wildcats never looked back, scoring two more goals before the half. Ball State tried to comeback, notching 11 shots to 3 in the second period. But Villanova clinched the win with a final goal by Sam Haas putting the game out of reach for the Cardinals 4-1.
Ball State returns to action 1 p.m. Sunday against Michigan in Ann Arbor. The Cardinals open Mid-American Conference play 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 16 against Miami on the road.
