ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Ball State field hockey team lost 4-0 to Michigan 1 p.m. Sunday. Both teams now hold a 2-3 overall record.
Ball State was outshot 24-4 in the game, while attempting two penalty corner opportunities to Michigan's seven. Brooke MacGillivary, Elizabeth Blaum and Gretchen Lulow were the three Cardinals to record a shot on goal. Goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett stopped nine shots in 70 minutes of action in the cage.
The Cardinals were able to hold the Wolverines to just one goal in the first period on a shot to the right side at the 25:25 mark. But Michigan found the back of the net once again just ten minutes into the second period on an unassisted shot by Bryn Bain. While giving up just one Ball State shot in the period, Michigan put the game out of reach, scoring two more goals ten minutes apart. The final 0-4 loss marks Ball State's first shutout this season.
"We are going to have to make adjustments that we can carry into Mid-American Conference play," said head coach Annette Payne.
Ball State is scheduled to face Miami in the Cardinal's Mid-American Conference opener 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 16. The team then challenges No. 18 Indiana for its last of a seven-game road stretch 1 p.m. Saturday, September 19.
