MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State (1-3) women's volleyball team rallied behind Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) and Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) to score a 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-19) sweep over instate rival IPFW (3-3) Friday night at Worthen Arena in its opening match of the 2009 Active Ankle Challenge.
In the tournament's opening match, Louisville (2-2) scored a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-15) victory over SIU-Edwardsville (0-6).
After a very tight opening set in the nightcap, the Cardinals came to life on their home court in the second frame as Green (seven) and Phillips (five) combined for 12 of BSU's 15 kills in a 25-18 set victory. The Cardinals carried over the momentum in the third frame, winning the set by six points on a service ace from Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.)
"I could not be more proud of the way our team played tonight in a tough situation," said Ball State head coach Dave Boos. "We had a lot of players turn in strong individual performances."
Green finished the night with a match-high 17 kills, while Phillips added 14 markers to go along with a .619 (14-1-21) attack percentage. Phillips also tied teammate Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) for match-high honors with four total blocks.
"That was the Charde' and Alisha we see every day in practice," added Boos. "I think we are going to see a lot more of those types of performances from those two. That is what they are capable of doing on a daily basis."
Defensively, the Cardinals had three players log double-digit digs, paced by Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) match-high 18. Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) added 15 digs, while Karin Caudill (Selma, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) scored 11.
Mayara Schlindwein paced the Mastodons' offense with 11 kills, while Tessa McGill led the team with 12 digs. Overall, Ball State out-hit IPFW .266 (48-15-124) to .157 (33-15-115) in the match, while holding a 60 to 51 edge in digs.
The opening set saw the teams play to a 9-9 tie before a 5-1 Ball State run, capped by a kill from Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.), gave the hosts a 14-10 advantage. IPFW would rally back and tie the set at 17, before kills from Megan Steenhuysen and Schlindwein gave the guests a 19-17 edge.
A kill from Green and a Mastodons attack error tied the set once again at 19, while the teams went on to play to a 23-23 deadlock. A BSU attack error gave IPFW the first set point, but two kills from Phillips surrounding a Green marker gave the Cardinals the 26-24 frame victory.
The teams played to a 10-10 tie in the second game, before a Mastodons attack error and a pair of Green kills pushed the score to 13-10 and shifted the momentum to the Ball State side of the court. From there, the Cardinals out-scored IPFW 12-8 down the stretch to win the frame at 25-18 on Green's seventh kill of the stanza.
The third frame was also close early, as the teams battled to a 13-13 tie. However, four straight Ball State kills, two from Phillips and two from Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.), and a Boyd service ace allowed the Cardinals to surge ahead 19-13. A kill from Breivogel gave the Cardinals match-point, while Schembra's ace capped the victory.
