MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State (2-3) women's volleyball team picked up its second win of the 2009 Active Ankle Challenge with a 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20) victory over SIU-Edwardsville (0-7) Saturday afternoon at Worthen Arena.
In the second day's opening match, Louisville (3-2) posted a 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18) victory over IPFW (3-4) to force a showdown between the Cardinals in the Active Ankle Challenge championship match Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
IPFW and SIU-Edwardsville will play in the 5 p.m. match.
In the first of its two Saturday contests, the Cardinals were led offensively by Julie Breivogel's (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) match-best 16 kills. Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) continued her solid play in the tournament by racking up 13 kills, while Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) added nine.
Defensively, Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) collected 16 digs for BSU, while Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) added 15.
Brittany McGinnis (Fraser, Mich./Fraser H.S.) guided the Ball State offense to a season-best .289 (57-18-135) attack percentage, while handing out 46 assists and collecting four digs and three kills.
A pair of Cougars added double-digit kills in the contest, as Sydney Winslow smashed 12 and Brittni Birkey collected 10. Tiffany Turner was the team's top defender with 13 digs.
As a team, BSU limited SIU-Edwardsville to a .216 (55-25-139) rate of success from the attack line.
Behind strong play in set one from Phillips, who led the Cardinals with five kills, and McGinnis, who registered 12 assists, the Cardinals bounced back from an early 6-2 deficit to win the first frame, 25-21.
After trailing 6-2, BSU turned in five of the next six points to lock the teams into a 7-7 stalemate. With the score tied at 16, Ball State scored three straight points on kills from Phillips and Green, surrounding a Breivogel ace, to take at 19-16 advantage. The Cougars would get no closer than two points the rest of the frame, as BSU scored a 25-21 opening frame victory.
The Cougars retaliated in the second set despite trailing BSU most of the way. The home team jumped out to an 11-7 lead behind several SIU-Edwardsville attack errors and a pair of kills from Green. The Cougars bounced back, however, taking a 16-15 lead and never looked back.
The Cardinals remained close behind two kills from Jennifer Boyd (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley H.S.) and Breivogel but following an SIU-Edwardsville timeout at 22-20, the Cougars rallied off the set's final three points to even the match at 1-1.
The third frame saw the two teams trade points early on before SIU-Edwardsville broke things open with a 7-2 run to lead 14-9. The Cougars maintained their five point advantage at 19-14 before BSU made its biggest run of the match. Jump-started by a Green kill, the Cardinals took the next six points and a 20-19 lead. Breivogel, who led BSU in kills (six) for the second consecutive set, had two during the run.
The Cougars responded with two straight points before Breivogel recorded four straight kills to set BSU up for the frame's winning point. Phillips and Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.) then teamed up to block an attack by Brooke Smith to give BSU another 25-21 victory and a 2-1 edge in the match.
BSU carried its momentum into the fourth set and matched its largest lead of the match twice, including in the final score. Trailing 6-4 early, the Cardinals hit double digits first and opened up a 15-10 lead. Green led BSU with six kills.
SIU-Edwardsville got as close as two points, 19-17, but behind two late kills from Kakatolis and a Boyd service ace, BSU closed out the match 25-20.
