Dave Boos resigned from the position of head women's volleyball coach at Ball State University March 3, 2010. He resigned to accept an assistant coaching position at the University of Florida. Boos ended his three-year career (2007-09) at Ball State with a 32-62 (.340) overall record, including a 17-31 (.354) mark in Mid-American Conference play.
"We want to thank Dave for the contributions he has made to the women's volleyball program over the past three years," said BSU director of athletics Tom Collins. "The team has improved consistently under his tenure and is set up for future success. We wish him and his family the best of luck in their future endeavors."
Boos was named the fifth head women's volleyball coach in BSU history on Jan. 8, 2007, after completing his third season as associate head coach and fifth season overall at the University of Minnesota in 2006.
"We are very fortunate to have someone the caliber of Dave join the Ball State family," said Collins upon Boos' hiring. "He is one of the most talented young coaches of this generation and will be an excellent representative for the Ball State women's volleyball program. He is a consummate competitor, technician and recruiter, who continues to excel as a student and teacher of the game."
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to direct the Ball State women's volleyball program," said Boos when hired. "Ball State University has developed a rich volleyball tradition, and I look forward to leading the program to a new level of success. Muncie, Indiana, is a hotbed for the sport of volleyball. This is a community that understands and appreciates volleyball, and I look forward to exciting them about a new direction for Ball State volleyball."
Boos' third season at Ball State was the team's best under his tutelage, as the Cardinals finished one match below .500 with a 15-16 overall mark. The team's 7-9 MAC record was also its best under Boos, and helped the Cardinals earn the No. 8 seed and first round hosting rights in the MAC Tournament. The Cardinals advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2009 MAC Tournament for the second straight season, topping No. 9 seed Akron in the first round.
The Cardinals finished the 2009 season with the best defense in the league, limiting opponents to a league-low .177 attack percentage. Leading the charge on defense was First Team All-MAC selection sophomore Kelsey Brandl, who paced the team and ranked sixth in the league with a 0.98 blocks-per-game average. BSU's players also picked up three MAC Player of the Week awards over the course of the 2009 season, with junior Charde' Phillips (Sept. 9) and Brandl (Nov. 16) earning offensive honors, while junior Alyssa Rio (Nov. 9) collected defensive accolades.
The Cardinals posted a 12-21 overall record in 2008, while securing a seventh-place finish in MAC play with a 6-10 league ledger. BSU's biggest win of the season came on the road, when it defeated then-first place Miami (Oct. 25) in five sets. The Cardinals also advanced to the MAC Tournament quarterfinals, after picking up a first round home court victory over Eastern Michigan (Nov. 18).
Boos saw two of his recruits earn conference honors after the 2008 campaign with both Jennifer Boyd and Brittany McGinnis earning MAC All-Freshman accolades. In addition, Boyd was named Second Team All-MAC after ranking fifth in the league in hitting percentage at .313.
Despite a 5-25 (4-12 Mid-American Conference) record in his first season at the Ball State helm, the Cardinals showed improvement on the court, winning two of its final five matches and falling a few points shy of advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2007 MAC Tournament. Defensively, the Cardinals ranked among the league leaders in blocking, digging and opponent's hitting percentage, while then-freshman Rio ranked fourth in the MAC and 37th nationally with her 5.58 digs-per-set average.
In his five seasons at Minnesota (2002-06) under head coach Mike Hebert, Boos helped guide the Gophers to a 142-38 overall and 80-20 Big Ten record, including the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division I National Championship match in 2004.
Minnesota reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Boos' five years on the staff, earning trips to the Final Four in 2003 and 2004. In 2002, he helped the Gophers capture the program's first-ever Big Ten Championship.
"Dave played a large role in our success as a program in his five years here at Minnesota," said Hebert. "He is a talented, multi-skilled coach who should have a lot of success at Ball State. We are appreciative of what he helped us accomplish in his five years at Minnesota and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors."
As the program's associate head coach the last three seasons, Boos' duties included serving as technical coordinator, defensive coordinator, liaison for the strength and conditioning program and liaison for the marketing department. He was also responsible for scouting opponents, preparing game plans, overseeing and ordering team equipment, scheduling, directing the Minnesota Volleyball Camps, hiring team managers, hiring male practice players and maintaining technology in the office.
Chief among Boos' duties during his two seasons as assistant coach at Minnesota was serving as recruiting coordinator, in which he was responsible for signing two classes - - 2002 and 2004 - - which ranked fourth in the nation according to prepvolleyball.com. He was also the team's offensive coordinator, while assisting with on-court training of USA Volleyball techniques.
During May of 2006, Boos served as assistant coach of the USA A-2 Women's National Team under Florida head coach Mary Wise. In his time with the team, Boos served as defensive coordinator, while assisting in practice planning and scouting opponents. Boos also served as a coaching intern on the USA National Training Team under USA National Team Coach Toshi Yoshida in February of 2003.
"Ball State made a great choice in Dave," said Wise. "Having coached both with and against him, I can easily see great things ahead for that program."
Prior to joining the Minnesota coaching staff, Boos spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana (1999-2001) where he helped guide the Hoosiers to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999. Boos began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Wisconsin-Oshkosh from 1995-1998.
Over his Minnasota coaching career, Boos helped guide his student-athletes to 33 Academic All-Big Ten selections, 14 All-Big Ten honors, 12 AVCA All-Region awards, 10 AVCA All-America accolades, four Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors, four NCAA Division III All-America selections, one Big Ten Player of the Year and one NCAA Division III Player of the Year.
Boos was a player for the Wisconsin-Oshkosh men's club team from 1994-1999 and served as the club's head coach from 1996-1999. He led the team to the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association Division II National Championship as the setter and head coach in 1996. A four-time First Team All-Wisconsin Volleyball Conference selection, Boos guided the program to conference championships in 1997, 1998 and 1999. The 1998 squad finished the season ranked in the NIRSA Division I Top 5. Boos compiled a 144-36-4 overall record as the club's coach.
Boos, who graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a bachelor of science degree in 1998, is married to the former Amy Ward.
