September 22, 2009 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team dropped its home opener to Ohio State Tuesday 5-0. The Cardinals own a 2-6 record overall after playing three teams in the Top 25 national rankings.
The Buckeyes outshot Ball State 24-5 and did not allow a shot on goal for 70 minutes. The Cardinals trailed 3-0 at the half with one shot by Devanny Kuhn. Kuhn led Ball State with two shots.
Maria Briones Vidal led Ohio State producing two goals and two assists out of the five goals her team scored. A tip in by Ball State's Hannah Jones barely missed as it hit off the edge of the cage and sent out of bounds in the second period. It was the closest the Cardinals would come to putting a mark on the board.
Elizabeth Blaum logged a defensive save in the game, the fifth in her career. Katie Norris posted her first career defensive save at the 59:05 mark. But by stopping it with her foot, the foul in the circle gave Ohio State a penalty stroke opportunity. However, Cardinal goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett prevented another goal after diving across the net to block it. Shifflett finished with 10 saves in the cage.
Ball State is back to conference action noon Saturday, September 26 against Central Michigan. The Chippewas are 2-4 overall with a loss in Mid-American Conference play against Miami.
