MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - The Ball State field hockey team dropped its second Mid-American Conference game against the Central Michigan Chippewas Saturday 4-1. The Cardinals fall to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the MAC.
Ball State held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corner opportunities, but fell short in shots 13-8. Brooke MacGillivary and Brittany Hammer each recorded three of the team's eight total shots on goal. Hammer allowed the Cardinals to take the lead early, tipping in a shot from the front of the goal. Ball State maintained the lead 25 minutes into the first period. However, the Chippewas rallied back with two goals by Pam Suefert before the end of the first period.
The Cardinals trailed by one goal throughout the second period until the 56:12 mark. They fired off five shots on goal, but could not change the deficit on the scoreboard. Central Michigan managed to seal the game 4-1 with two goals off penalty strokes.
Leann Carroll posted her first career defensive save, while Tiffany Shifflett recorded three saves as goalkeeper in all 70 minutes.
Ball State hosts two conference games next weekend against Miami 3 p.m. Friday, October 2 and Missouri State 2 p.m. (ET) October 3.
