TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - - With a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-20) sweep of tournament hosts Indiana State (3-7) Saturday evening, the Ball State (5-4) women's volleyball team claimed the 2009 Best Western ISU Classic championship at ISU Arena.
On their way to the tournament title, the Cardinals posted sweeps of Chicago State, Eastern Illinois and tournament hosts ISU in the championship match.
"We came in with the goal of winning the tournament and our team stayed focused and driven throughout the weekend," said Ball State head coach Dave Boos. "While we had some close sets, we never let anyone get within striking distance the entire tournament. That is a tremendous amount of focus to have."
For her efforts in the two-day event, BSU's Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. In the championship match, Green slugged eight kills while adding a solo block.
Overall, Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) provided the bulk of the BSU offense in Saturday's nightcap with a match-best 16 kills. She also hit a career-best .696 (16-0-23) to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North H.S.) also turned in a solid effort for the Cardinals, blasting a BSU career-high eight kills, while hitting .667 (8-0-12) and adding three total blocks.
As a team, the Ball State offense finished the match with a .340 (43-10-97) attack percentage. On the defensive end, BSU limited the Indiana State attack to a .125 (35-20-120) clip.
Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) led the BSU backcourt with 12 digs and was also named to the all-tournament team. Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) added 10 digs in the victory.
Jodilynne Stoker paced the Indiana State attack with 12 kills in the title tilt, while Whitney Fromm added a team-best eight digs.
Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.) opened the match with a kill and helped the Cardinals build an early 6-2 advantage. Ball State pushed its lead to five points at 10-5 after a kill from Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.). However, a 5-2 run by the Sycamores got the hosts within two at 12-10.
The Cardinals capitalized on a service error and a Breivogel ace to score the next two points, making the score 14-10. ISU would get no closer than three points the rest of the game, as back-to-back kills from Breivogel gave the Cardinals set point at 24-18, while a Green kill ended the stanza at 25-19.
Ball State opened the second set with four of the first six points, and went on to take an 8-3 advantage on a pair of kills from Phillips, sandwiching a Green kill. After calling timeout, the hosts posted the next two points, but a kill from Phillips and a Green block extended the BSU lead back to five at 10-5.
Indiana State would draw within two points at 11-9 after a pair of aces from Whitney Fromm, only to see the Cardinals rattle off the next three points. From there, BSU reached set point at 24-18 off a Brandl kill. A Waters ace on the next play ended the set at 25-18.
Ball State opened the third set with an 8-1 run, as Breivogel and Phillips each smashed a pair of kills. With the Cardinals holding an 18-10 advantage, the host Sycamores came to life, as a 9-4 run cut the lead to three and forced BSU to call timeout.
A Breivogel kill and an ISU attack error after the break gave the Cardinals match point at 24-19. After a BSU service error, the Cardinals would win the 2009 Best Western ISU Classic on an Indiana State service error.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Tuesday when they travel to IUPUI for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Jaguars.
