Volleyball Sweeps Past IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - The Ball State (6-4) women's volleyball team picked up its fourth straight sweep with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-23) victory over IUPUI (8-2) Tuesday evening at the Jungle.
While the Cardinals' offense continued to shine in the victory, combining for a .305 (43-14-95) attack percentage, it was the defense the posted a season-best 12 total blocks. Sophomore transfer Kelsey Brandl (Lakeview, Minn./Lakeville North H.S) led BSU at the net with a career-high seven total blocks, two solo and five assists.
Senior Julie Breivogel (Boonville, Ind./Boonville H.S.) paced the BSU offense with 13 kills, while posting a season-best .350 (9-2-20) attack percentage. Junior Charde' Phillips (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria H.S.) also added double-figure kills in the contest, with 11, while tying three other Cardinals with three total blocks.
In the backcourt, sophomores Kaylee Schembra (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli H.S.) and Christie Waters (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) each tallied 11 digs, as the Cardinals held a 44-to-34 advantage in total digs.
Ashley Johnson paced the IUPUI offense with 11 kills, while posting three blocks. Shari Bernhardt finished the contest with a match-best 12 digs for IUPUI. As a team, the Jaguars hit .146 (35-20-103).
After falling behind 2-0 in the opening set, the Cardinals came to life as an Elaina Kakatolis (Arcanum, Ohio/Franklin Monroe H.S.) kill followed by a Brandl ace helped spark an 8-1 Ball State run, making the score 8-3. From there, the Cardinals pulled ahead by eight points at the 17-9 mark thanks to a Brandl and Breivogel block assist.
The Jaguars would not go down easy however, as they rallied within three at 20-17 with an 8-3 run capped by kills from Johnson and Kalyse Reimbold. The Cardinals responded with a Phillips kill and a pair of solo blocks from Alisha Green (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest H.S.) to regain a six-point edge at 23-17.
IUPUI followed with the next three points, but an attack error and a Brandl kill ended the set at 25-20 in favor of Ball State. Phillips was BSU's top attacker in the set, racking up five kills on five swings.
After battling to a 4-4 tie to open the second set, IUPUI rattled off four of the next five points to build an 8-5 edge. The Cardinals followed with a 5-1 run of its own, as an IUPUI attack error gave BSU its first lead of the frame at 10-9. With the score knotted at 11, kills from Phillips and Breivogel pushed the score to 13-11 and forced the Jaguars to call timeout.
Ball State extended its lead to three points at 15-12 on kills from Breivogel and Kakatolis. The host Jaguars went on to post the next three points, tying the set at 15 and making BSU use its first break. From there the teams battled to an 18-18 deadlock before kills from Breivogel and Kakatolis, followed by a block assists from Kakatolis and Brandl, gave BSU a 22-19 lead. Ball State went on to close out the set at 25-22 on a Green kill.
The Cardinals scored four of the first five points in the third set, with Brandl and Phillips posting kills in the run. BSU pushed its lead to four points at 11-7, and maintained the margin at 13-9. The host Jaguars were able to pull within one point at 14-13, but back-to-back kills from Green, an attack error and a pair of blocks from Brandl gave BSU its biggest lead of the set at 19-13.
IUPUI was able to claw back within two at 21-19, but a Breivogel kill after a BSU timeout gave the momentum back to the Cardinals as they scored the next three points to reach match-point at 24-19. The Jaguars had one last run, scoring the next four points, but an IUPUI error ended the set at 25-23 and the match at 3-0.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Friday at noon, when it opens play in the Towson Invitational versus Penn.
