Soccer Falls To Regional Power Dayton, 4-0

DAYTON, Ohio - The Ball State soccer team concluded its program-record five-game road swing Friday night as the Cardinals dropped a 4-0 contest to regional power Dayton at Baujan Field. The loss drops Ball State to 0-5-0 on the season while the Flyers remain unbeaten and improve to 3-0-3 on the year.
"The first half tonight we were awesome against a very good Dayton team," head coach Michael Lovett said. "We had some defensive mishaps in the second half that allowed goals and you can't do that against a team of Dayton's caliber. We have many good things to take from this game and we look forward to building on those positives Sunday afternoon in our home opener."
Dayton, which was ranked in the top spot in the region to open the year and is receiving votes in this week's national poll, posted its fourth straight shutout. The Flyers have only allowed one goal through six games this season with that goal coming to No. 25 Auburn in a 1-1 tie. Ball State was limited to five shots on the night while the Flyers tallied 29 shots in the victory.
The Cardinals had a couple of early scoring chances by junior midfielder (Carmel, Ind./Marshall). Gordon had a shot go wide in the 15th minute and forced Dayton goalkeeper Katherine Boone to make a diving save in the 25th of action. Missy Gordon
Dayton opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as Lauren MacCormick scored on a breakaway past freshman goalkeeper (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville). The Cardinals held the Flyers scoreless for the rest of the first half by Dayton came out and scored early in the second have off of a redirection in the box in the 48th minute by Mandi Back. The Flyers added two more goals down the stretch, including a second goal from MacCormick to cap the scoring in the 73rd minute. Nicole Wood
Wood tallied a career-high eight saves in the loss while Boone picked up her fourth shutout of the season as she recorded one save.
The Cardinals will finally open the home portion of the 2009 schedule Sunday afternoon as they host SIU-Edwardsville at 1 p.m. at the BSU Soccer Field. Admission to the contest is free.
