COLUMBUS, Ohio – Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) commissioner Chris Schneider announced today that the Grand Canyon University (Phoenix, Ariz.) men's volleyball team has been admitted as a full member of the MIVA for the 2010 season.
The Antelopes ('Lopes) will face the other six members (Ball State, IPFW, Lewis, Loyola-Chicago, Ohio State, Quincy) in double round-robin play and will be eligible for the postseason MIVA Tournament.
Grand Canyon completed its first year of competition under head coach Chad Speer in 2009.
"It's great for our school to be associated with one of the top two conferences in the country," said Speer, grouping the MIVA with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, which includes current national champion UC-Irvine.
Last season, the Ball State men's volleyball team traveled to Phoenix for a pair of matches versus the Antelopes. In the first contest, BSU scored a 3-1 (30-20, 30-23, 27-30, 30-12) victory March 7, while adding a 3-0 (30-13, 30-19, 30-18) sweep the following afternoon.
“It's good that our league is growing,” said Ball State head coach Joel Walton. “Grand Canyon University is excited to be playing in the MIVA, and I would expect them to be competitive quickly.”
