Nielsen Named MAC West Player of the Week

Nielsen led the Cardinals into sole possession of first place in the MAC West Division with a doubleheader sweep at Buffalo this past weekend. He was six-of-nine (.667) in the two games against the Bulls and drove in five runs. Four out of his five RBI came with two outs in the twin bill as he led the Cardinals to a 5-2 conference start.
Nielsen tallied a .538 (seven-of-13) average in the Cardinals' three games last week to improve his batting average to .374 which is second best on the team. He is second on the team with 40 hits and fourth on the team in RBI with 22.
Nielsen joins junior center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker (Selma, Ind./Wapahani), sophomore right-hander Kolbrin Vitek (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan), junior right-hander Brad Piatt (Galveston, Ind./Lewis Cass) and junior left fielder Kory Benbow (Muncie, Ind./Cowan) as MAC West weekly award winners this season.
The Cardinals return to action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for a midweek non-conference contest against Purdue. Ball State will also host Indiana Tech Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Ball Diamond.
