April 22, 2009 | Softball
MOREHEAD, Ky. ? The Ball State softball team (23-19) fell to Morehead State (30-14) Tuesday as it begins a seven-game road stretch. The second game of the double header was cancelled due to heavy rain and hail.
GAME ONE
Despite hitting two home runs in the game, Ball State fell to Morehead State 7-5. The Eagles played catch-up all game until a sixth inning rally gave the Eagles an advantage on four runs.
In the first inning, Jen Moore started her tenth game and earned her first career home run with a two-run shot over the left center field wall to allow the Cardinals to draw blood first.
A double to right center put two runners in scoring position for the Eagles in the bottom of the second, and a single through the middle tied the game at two apiece.
Alyssa Collins drove in Rozanski on a single into shallow center field as the Cardinals took back the lead in the top of the third. Laura Masch struck out five batters throughout three innings. However, in the bottom of the fourth, Bianca Cardenas hit a solo home run as Morehead tied the score once more 3-3.
The umpire called a rain delay after the inning, and thirty seconds later it stopped and play resumed.
Elizabeth Milian (16-12) came in for Masch in the bottom of the fifth, giving up just one hit. In the top of the sixth, Alicia Barkley singled to left field and advanced to third on a throwing error. She later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jen Reifschneider to command the lead once more for the Cardinals. But the Eagles fought back and scored off an RBI single to center field. Another run scored on a hit down the right field line as Morehead State took the lead for the first time... and kept it for good. The bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, and the Eagles drove in two more runs on single to left field for a 7-4 lead.
Leading off in the top of the seventh, Kate Wilczynski earned her first home run of the season, second in her career to bring Ball State within two, but it would not be enough as the Cardinals' three-run deficit gave Morehead State the victory.
GAME TWO
Despite a 5-3 lead and Amanda Montalto hitting her third home run in three games, the second game was cancelled on account of hail and heavy rain prior to the start of the fourth inning.
Ball State continues its road stretch, facing Indiana (7-32) 3 p.m. Wednesday in a double header, followed by a double header 1 p.m. Friday at Akron. The Cardinals also play Ohio 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday for the last road game this season before the MAC Tournament.
