April 23, 2009 | Softball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? In only the second time this season, the Ball State softball team (23-21) was swept by an opponent. The Cardinals fell to Indiana (9-32) in Wednesday's double header and earlier in the season to then No. 15 Ohio State.
GAME ONE
Despite leading in hits 3-2, the Cardinals fell short one run against the Hoosiers in the first game.
Each team went scoreless throughout two innings. Elizabeth Milan (16-13) struck out three batters to close the bottom of the third; striking out seven total in the game. Both teams played even until Lisa Rozanski logged the first hit of the day with a single to left field in the third inning. She stole second before advancing to third on a sacrifice by Allie Pennock. Alyssa Collins notched a single over the shortstop, scoring Rozanski to issue Ball State's first run.
After two walks, the Hoosiers earned a hit of their own on an RBI single in the bottom of the third, putting the score 1-1. Runners remained in scoring positions at second and third; however, Ball State's defense held strong, denying the next two batters any hits and eliminating any runs.
Amanda Montalto earned a third hit for the Cardinals, but pinch runner Jackie Durment was unable to make it around.
With two outs, and one runner on, Indiana scored a second run in the bottom of the fifth on a catching error at first base.
For the second game in a row, the Cardinals could not hold on for a win late in the game, falling one run short 2-1 after six and a half innings.
GAME TWO
In a one-hit shutout for Indiana, the Hoosiers came out swinging, finding the gaps for 11 hits.
Leading off in the first inning, Rozanski singled through the left side... the only hit of the game. She also stole two bases, tying the career record at 70. She earned the single-season record with 43 last year and has stolen 27 this season as a sophomore.
The Hoosiers' first hit was a triple in the bottom of the second. Two walks followed, loading the bases. A single in shallow center field gave Indiana one-run lead, with bases still loaded. An RBI double increased that lead to four.
After a scoreless third inning for both teams, Indiana found three more runs off five hits, increasing the lead 7-0. The Hoosiers' run in the bottom of the fifth gave them an eight-run lead and the victory by the eight-run rule before the Cardinals could close the inning.
Laura Masch took the loss for a 7-5 overall record with three strikeouts. Freshman Kim Mazzapica pitched the last two-thirds inning. The Cardinals never placed more than four batters at the plate in any inning.
Ball State continues on the road with a double header 1 p.m. Friday at Akron. The Cardinals also play Ohio 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday for the last road game this season before the MAC Tournament.
