Men's Golf Wins Cardinal Collegiate

Ball State's men's golf team took a 15-stroke lead into the final day of the 14-team Cardinal Collegiate in Jasper, Ind., and the final round was cancelled due to the weather. The Cardinals, who were hosting the tournament sponsored by the Dubois County Visitor's Bureau at Sultan's Run Golf Club, won its first event of the season.
The tournament title was the first for Ball State since winning the 2006 First Energy Intercollegiate, and the 10th tournament title in head coach Mike Fleck's Ball State career.
Ball State sophomore Anthony Novak, who was competing as an individual in the tournament, tallied a 71-73=144 to win the event. The individual championship was the first in Novak's Ball State career.
Sophomore Eric Steger led the Cardinals with a 74-72=146 to finish in third place in the 75-player field.
Senior Brian Maurer managed a 76-71=147, and tied for fourth. Junior Ross Cosat tallied a 73-75=148 to tie for sixth overall. Senior Andrew Rhodes managed a 74-76=150 to tie for 10th, while senior Matt Schumaker shot a 76-77=153 and tied for 21st.
T.J. Carpenter, also competing as an individual, carded a 78-84=162.
Ball State tallied a 297-294=591, while Miami University was second with a 606. Indiana and Cincinnati tied for sixth, while IUPUI tied for eighth with Austin Peay.
