
Softball Picks Up 6-5 Win Over Boston In Eighth Inning

CLEARWATER, Fla. ? The Ball State softball team defeated Boston University 6-5 Wednesday as part of South Florida's Under Armour Showcase.
Boston University tripled in the first inning for the team's first hit, but both teams were held scoreless throughout the first two innings. With one out, Kamilah Holle singled up the middle for Ball State's first hit in the third. She advanced around the bases off two throwing errors by the Terriers. Alicia Barkley then singled to left field to advance Lisa Rozanski who reached on an error and stole second. Alyssa Collins also reached on a wild pitch after three strikes, allowing Rozanski to score. Collins then stole second and Barkley scored on the throw, giving Ball State a 3-0 lead.
Kate Wilczynski caught a line drive and threw to first for a double play the following inning. Natalie Bejarano made the third out by catching a popup off the batter.
Boston's Nora Militz doubled to left center, knocking in a run in the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly and a throwing error allowed the Terriers to tie the game 3-3.
Defensive efforts saved the Cardinals once again when, with bases loaded and two outs, Elizabeth Milian struck out Shayne Lotito to end the top of the sixth inning. She struck out eight batters in the meeting.
Jen Reifschneider stepped to the plate for the Cardinals and knocked a two-run homer over the center field wall, allowing Collins to score. The run put Ball State up 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Her home run is her fifth this year and ties the single-season leaders for fifth.
Boston then notched a double for two RBI to tie the game again at five a piece in the top of the seventh.
Ball State could not score in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. No runner was placed on second in the extended play.
The Cardinals held the Terriers at bay in the eighth, giving up no hits. Collins then beat out her bunt, setting up the winning run. Reifschneider grounded out, but advanced Collins to second. Milian drove one out to right field to put Collins on third. With runners at first and third, Jen Moore was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Wilczynski singled to right center to drive in the winning run and RBI with Collins for a final score of 6-5 in eight innings.
The Cardinals (6-9) will continue the Under Armour Showcase playing Florida Gulf Coast 1p.m. Thursday followed by Hofstra at 6 p.m. Hofstra previously beat Ball State 2-1 this season on March 6.
