DAY TWO RECAP
KENT, Ohio - - Behind three second-day event victories by fifth-year senior Amber Williams, the Ball State women's indoor track & field team tied for third place among 12 teams at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Kent State. Ball State was fifth after the first day of competition.
Williams collected 30 of the Cardinals 73 total points in the two-day meet, scoring Saturday victories in the 60-meter hurdles (8.24), 60-meter dash (7.44) and 200-meter dash (24.27). Akron was crowned the 2009 MAC Champion with 126 points, followed by Kent State (101 points) in second and BSU and Miami tied for third.
Williams, whose times in the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash were Kent State Fieldhouse record and NCAA provisional qualifying marks, was joined in the top six in the 60-meter hurdles by junior Katie Johnson who earned six points by placing third (8.53) and sophomore Ra'Jae Marable who tallied three points by coming in sixth place (8.79).
Freshman Janae Taylor joined Williams in the 60-meter and 200-meter dash finals, delivering eight-place finishes in each event with times of 7.76 and 25.03, respectively.
Junior Ali Bishel, who won the 5,000-meter run Friday, compiled her second victory of the MAC Championships Saturday by winning the 3,000-meter run on a clocking of 9:43.23.
Junior Brittany Ade placed sixth (2:13.99) in the 800-meter run, tallying three points for the Cardinals.
The 4x400 relay team of fifth-year senior Christina Whitt, junior Jenna Schmitmeyer, sophomore Thekla Lorenz and freshman Kelsey Stephens contributed one point on an eighth-place clocking of 3:53.61.
In Saturday's field events, senior Jessica Genovese was BSU's top performer in the high jump, finishing just outside the top eight, tying for ninth with a height of 5-03.75. Senior Lauren McNichols also tied for ninth in the pole vault, clearing 11-7.75.
Freshman Megan Cherry was BSU's top finisher in the triple jump with a 19th-place distance of 34-11.75, while BSU did not have any make the shot put finals.
Up next for the Ball State indoor track and field team is the Notre Dame Invitational, where members of the squad will get their last opportunity to qualify for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships which will be held March 12-15 in College Station, Texas.

DAY ONE RECAP
KENT, Ohio - - The Ball State indoor track and field team began its quest for a fourth indoor conference championship Friday opening day one with 18 points to rank fifth at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Kent State University.
Junior Ali Bishel led the Cardinals on day one, registering ten points on a first-place finish in the 5,000-meter run courtesy of an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:39.8.
In pentathlon competition, sophomore Thekla Lorenz earned eight points for the Cardinals while also setting an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with 3,758 points and placing second. Among pentathlon competitors, Lorenz won the long jump (19-02 1/2), and finished second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.02), fifth in the 800-meter run (2:20.42), ninth in the shot put (32-02 3/4), and tenth in the high jump (5-02 1/4).
In preliminary action, BSU dominated the 60-meter hurdles qualifying three athletes for Saturday's finals. Junior Katie Johnson won the prelims (8.51), with fifth-year senior Amber Williams (8.52) and sophomore Ra'Jae Marable (8.76) earning second and fifth-place finishes, respectively.
Johnson also advanced to the 400-meter dash finals, finishing fourth (56.31) in Friday's prelims.
The Cardinals fared well in the 60-meter and 200-meter dash prelims, advancing Williams and freshman Janae Taylor in both events to Saturday's action. Williams, tying a Kent State Fieldhouse record, sprinted to a time of 7.50 placing first in the 60, while Taylor moved on with an eighth-place clocking of 7.68. In the 200, Williams placed second (24.51) while
Junior Brittany Ade qualified for the 800-meter finals finishing seventh with a prelim effort of 2:13.86.
Currently, Akron leads all MAC opponents with 39 points.
BSU will continue its effort at a league indoor title Saturday when action begins at 11:45 a.m. with the triple jump.

MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. ? The Ball State indoor track and field team will attempt to capture its fourth conference indoor title when it travels to Kent, Ohio this weekend, Feb. 27-28, for the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The Cardinals, who rank second in all-time league indoor championships, will compete against four-time defending champion Akron in addition to Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan.
Women's competition is slated to begin with the 60-meter hurdles portion of the pentathlon at 10:00 a.m. Friday (Feb. 27). The pentathlon continues at 10:45 a.m. with the high jump followed by the shot put at 12:15 p.m.
Continuing with field events, the weight throw is slated for 2:30 p.m. followed by the long jump at 4:30 p.m. The 800-meter run (pentathlon) will take place at 3:00 p.m.
In running events, preliminaries for the 60-meter hurdles at 3:15 p.m. After that, prelims continue with the 400 (3:40 p.m.), the 60-meter dash (4:15 p.m.), the 800 (4:40 p.m.), and the 200 (5:15 p.m.). Finals for the 5,000 start at 6:00 p.m., followed by the final event of the day, the distance medley relay (6:45 p.m.).
Saturday's (Feb. 28) competition begins with the triple jump at 11:45 a.m., with field event finals in the shot put (12:15 p.m.) and the high jump (1:00 p.m.) to follow. The pole vault gets underway at 2:30 p.m.
Also set to begin at 1:00 p.m. is the mile, with event finals in the 60-meter hurdles (1:45 p.m.), 400 (2:05 p.m.), 60-meter dash (2:35 p.m.), 800 (2:55 p.m.), 200 (3:15 p.m.), 3,000 (3:35 p.m.) to follow. The 4x400-meter relay will be the final event at 4:20 p.m.
