Men?s Volleyball Scores Second Sweep Of The Weekend

KENOSHA, Wis. - - The Ball State men's volleyball team scored its second sweep in as many nights with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-19) victory over Carthage Saturday at Tarble Arena.
The victory is BSU's fourth straight and fifth in the last six outings. Overall, BSU improves to 5-4 on the year, while Carthage drops to 4-15.
Matt Sprague (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette H.S.) was Ball State's top attacker on the night, logging nine kills. Todd Chamberlain (Louisville, Ky./Trinity H.S.) and Andy Nelson (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls H.S.) also added seven kills apiece in the victory.
Ethan Pheister (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood H.S.) guided Ball State to its best attacking effort of the season, as the Cardinals connected for a .455 (41-11-66) rate of success in the contest. Pheister also led all players with 32 assists, five aces and four total blocks.
In addition to his seven kills, Nelson finished the match with a 1.000 attack percentage, as did Pheister who tallied three kills.
Defensively, Chamberlain added a match-best seven digs to his stats line, while Pheister collected five.
Tom O'Connell was Carthage's top attacker connecting for eight kills, while Eric Ball tallied seven. Three players recorded three digs each to lead the hosts in that category.
Overall, BSU limited Carthage to a .123 attack percentage, while holding a 25 to 14 edge in digs and a 6.5 to four lead in team blocks.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will go for its fifth straight win Friday, when it returns to Worthen Arena to battle Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association rival IPFW at 7:30 p.m.
