Williams & Johnson Set NCAA Provisional Qualifying Marks in BSU Quadrangluar

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State indoor track and field team hosted the Ball State Quadrangular Friday in the Field Sports Building, winning six events en route to a second-place finish. Mid-American Conference opponent Western Michigan won the event for the second straight year, compiling 105.5 points.
Ball State earned 87.5 points, followed by Miami (64) and Northern Illinois (42).
Fifth-year senior Amber Williams and junior Katie Johnson recorded NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the 60-meter hurdles. Williams won the event and surpassed her MAC-leading time (8.29), while Johnson finished in second (8.42).
Williams also finished .01 shy of another NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.45, good for her second victory of the day. Freshman Janae Taylor finished behind Williams in third place, setting a career-fast time of 7.69. Williams and Taylor also finished second (25.22) and third (25.29) in the 200-meter dash.
Sophomore Ali Bishel won the mile with a mark of 4:57.51, less than two seconds away from breaking the Field Sports Building record. The next closest competitor finished 10 seconds behind Bishel.
Junior Brittany Ade ran to a BSU season-fast time of 2:16.85 in winning the 800. Sophomores Erin Filak and Megan Bevans finished third (2:19.29) and fourth (2:21.17), while freshman Christine Talhelm placed fifth (2:21.89).
Sophomore Thekla Lorenz tied a BSU season-best long jump of 18-11.75, finishing in second place, while sophomore Lindsay Bangert came in fourth (18-1).
Lorenz also won the 400-meter dash, posting a time of 58.66, with junior Jenna Schmitmeyer finishing in third (59.57) and fifth-year senior Christina Whitt placing fifth (1:00.49).
Lorenz and Schmitmeyer were also a part of the 4x400-relay squad that captured first place with a clocking of 4:00.55.
In the pole vault, senior Lauren McNichols tied for fourth with a vault of 10-10 while senior Lanae Stovall placed fifth in the shot put, recording a team season-best throw of 40-4 1/4.
Junior Tyra Schantz placed fifth in the weight throw with a season-best throw of 49-1 3/4. Winning the event was Western Michigan junior Irene Cooper with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and Field Sports Building record throw of 65-10.25.
The Cardinals return to action next weekend when they travel to Kent, Ohio for the MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, slated to begin at 10 a.m. on Friday (Feb. 27) and 10:45 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 28).
