
Men's Basketball Alumni Reunion Set for Saturday

The Ball State athletics department is hosting its annual Men's Basketball Alumni Reunion Weekend Saturday with a special emphasis on the 1988-89 team's 20th anniversary.
The weekend will feature an open gym time in Worthen Arena from 7-8 p.m. for all former Ball State basketball letterman and then a social at Damon's in Muncie from 9-11 p.m. The social is open to the public and all Ball State basketball fans are invited to attend. The list of former players returning for the Alumni Weekend span from 1960-2008.
At the Ball State men's basketball game Saturday vs. Tennessee Tech, the former basketball student-athletes will be the featured guests at a pregame reception in the Cardinal Room from 12:30-2 p.m. All Cardinal Varsity Club members who qualify for the Cardinal Room are invited to attend and honor the former basketball student-athletes. Prior to the 2 p.m. tipoff, the 1988-89 team will be honored on the court, while all the former basketball players will be recognized.
The 1988-89 team managed a 29-3 overall record under the direction of head coach Rick Majerus. The Cardinals tallied a 14-2 Mid-American Conference mark, won the MAC Championship and won the MAC Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Ball State received the No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament First Round, and played No. 8 seed Pittsburgh at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Ind. The 1988-89 team marked the fourth Ball State team in school history to advance to the NCAA Tournament, but the first to post a victory. The Cardinals tallied a 68-64 win over Pittsburgh and advanced to the second round where they suffered a 72-60 loss to No. 1 seeded Illinois, which advanced to the 1989 NCAA Final Four.
