Career High By Maggert Leads Women?s Hoops To Victory

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Junior forward Emily Maggert scored a career high 25 points in Ball State's 71-62 victory at Duquesne Saturday afternoon in the A.J. Palumbo Center. With the win the Cardinals improve to 5-5 on the season while the Dukes fall to 8-4.
Maggert led all scorers with her 25 point career performance. She also earned her sixth double-double of the season and eighth of her career after pulling down 15 rebounds. Two other Cardinals reached double digits on the day with senior guard Audrey McDonald chipping in 11 points and junior guard Ty'Ronda Benning ending the day with 10.
Ball State shot 50.9 percent from the field while holding Duquesne to 31.3 percent.
The Cardinals continued to play strong in the opening minutes of the second half. Maggert connected on three baskets while junior guard Ty'Ronda Benning had two fastbreak layup to give Ball State a 41-28 edge over Duquesne with 16:39 left on the clock.
The Dukes could not keep up with the Cardinals up tempo pace as Ball State continued to shoot the ball well, while playing strong defense eventually building a 17 point cushion with 13:56 left to play.
Duquesne chipped away at Ball State's lead after an 11-0 run the Dukes came within two 55-53 with a little over six minutes to play. The Cardinals regrouped and scored 11 unanswered points to take a 66-53 advantage with under three minutes remaining. Ball State held onto its lead the remainder of the contest to earn the victory.
It was a close ball game in the start of the first half. Duquesne led 8-4 at the beginning of the game after going on a 5-0 run. The Cardinals would answer with a 5-0 run to tie the game 9-9 after baskets from McDonald and Maggert. The Cardinals claimed the lead 14-13 off of a trey from McDonald with 12:40 remaining.
The Cardinals took control of the ball game at the 6:07 mark to go up 23-21 after Maggert connected on a three point play. Ball State would end the half with a nine point advantage (33-24) over Duquesne.
Ball State will continue non-conference play on the road at Evansville Tuesday with a 6 p.m. (CT) tipoff.
