Women's Hoops Loses 73-67 At Evansville

The Cardinals outrebounded the Purple Aces 50 to 38, but Evansville shot 40 percent from the field in the second half and had only nine turnovers for the game.
Junior forward Emily Maggert had yet another double-double performance with 20 points and 14 rebounds. It was Maggert's seventh double-double of the season and ninth of her career. Sophomore guard Patrice King chipped in 13 points while teammates senior guard Audrey McDonald had 12 and senior forward Danielle Gratton ended the night with 11.
It was a seesaw battle at the start of the second half. The Purple Aces went ahead 52-41 at the 11:35 mark. Ball State struggled offensively in the second period, Evansville held the Cardinals scoreless for several minutes.
King hit a jumper with 8:38 on the clock which sparked a 6-0 run for the Cardinals. Back-to-back baskets from junior guard Ty'Ronda Benning would cut Evansville's lead to 52-47 with six minutes to play.
In last second desperation the Cardinals would come within four 71-67 off of a three pointer from Benning but time would expire giving Evansville the victory.
After the Cardinals trailed at 4-3 in the start of the first half, Ball State managed to go on an 8-0 run which began after a layup from Gratton.
Ball State led by 10 points on four occasions, the last one was 27-17 after McDonald knocked down a trey with 8:12 remaining in the first period.
Evansville turned up the defense and went on an 11-0 run to take a 28-27 edge over Ball State with 4:14 left on the clock. Both teams would trade baskets but the Cardinals would manage to end the half up 35-34 over the Purple Aces.
The Ball State women's basketball team will continue non-conference action against in-state rival Butler Dec. 30 with a 7 p.m. tipoff at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
