Swimming & Diving Sweeps MAC Weekly Awards

MUNCIE, Ind. - - After turning in solid performances at the 2009 Doug Coers Invitational, Ball State swimmers Ben Battjes (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial H.S.) and Elizabeth Spilman (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) have sweep this week's Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week accolades.
Battjes helped guide the Ball State men's squad to a second-place showing at the Doug Coers Invitationalby scoring three events wins in the two-day meet. On the first day of action, Battjes took home top billing in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.49. He also swam the first leg for the winning 200 freestyle relay that logged a time of 1:25.88.
On the second day of competition, Battjes helped guide the Cardinals to a win in the 400 freestyle relay, swimming the first leg for the squad that posted a time of 3:10.82. He also swam to a fourth-place showing in the 100 butterfly (54.88) and a fifth-place effort in the 100 freestyle (48.56) at the meet.
Spilman helped guide the Ball State women's team to a first-place showing at the Doug Coers Invitational by posting a pair of individual event victories and a runner-up finish. Spilman started the meet by taking first place in the 500 free with a season-fast time of 5:09.57.
On the meet's second day, Spilman opened with a first-place effort in the 200 free, posting a season-fast time of 1:55.86. She followed with a second-place showing in the 1650 free with another season-best clocking of 18:03.30. She also swam anchor for the first-place 800 freestyle relay that turned in a time of 7:55.46.
Both the Ball State men's and women's swimming & diving teams return to action Dec. 4, when Eastern Illinois visits the Lewellen Aquatic Center. The meet, which starts at 6 p.m., will be webcasted live by Ball State Sports Link and can be seen free of charge on ballstatesports.com.
