Swimming & Diving Hosts Doug Coers Invite This Weekend

MUNCIE, Ind. - - The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will host Grand Valley State and Findlay as a part of the sixth annual Doug Coers Invitational in a two-day event that begins Friday at 6 p.m. in the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
The event is named after the late Doug Coers (1967-1997), who was a four-year member of the Ball State men's swimming and diving program from 1986-1989. From 1992-1993, Coers was a coach for the Catalina Swim Club, the Cardinal Swim Club, the Muncie Central High School Girls' Swim Team and assistant coach of the BSU women's swimming and diving program. The following four years, Coers coached the Dynamo Swim Club in Atlanta, Ga.
For the past seven seasons, the Ball State swimming & diving program has awarded the Douglas A. Coers Memorial Scholarship: Loving, kind, sincere and true in his heart. Dedicated with a passion for swimming and his alma mater. Those attributes represent the spirit and memory of Doug Coers.
Previous award winners include: Austin Laska (2008-09), Kyle Hembree (2007-08), Ryan Franklin (2006-07), Adam Konopka (2005-06), Ritchie Caudill (2004-05), Ryan Bowman (2003-04), Rod Smith (2002-03), Matt Pavlovich (2001-02).
The 2009 Doug Coers Invitational gets underway Friday at 6 p.m. with the 200 freestyle relay and is followed in succession by the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving (women), 3-meter diving (men) and the 400 medley relay.
Saturday's competition is divided into three sessions with the first stanza beginning at 9 a.m. The order of events for Saturday's first session include the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and 800 freestyle relay.
The second session of the day, beginning at 1 p.m., is highlighted by the women's 3-meter diving and the men's 1-meter diving events. The meet concludes with the 3 p.m. session, featuring the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle.
