MUNCIE, Ind. - As the Ball State men's golf team continues its 2009-10 season, there's a familiar name to keep an eye on for the Cardinals. Junior Eric Steger (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville H.S.), is one of the top returners for Ball State this season.
A year ago, Steger played in 35 competitive rounds with five top-20 finishes for the Cardinals. He built on his individual success with an impressive performance on the biggest stage of amateur golf in August, the 109th U.S. Amateur Championship.
Steger tied for ninth at the national event played in Tulsa, Okla., after the two rounds of stroke play.
"Eric had a really consistent summer," head coach Mike Fleck said. "I wasn't surprised when he qualified for the U.S. Amateur. For any of our players to qualify on a national stage and get the experience and exposure that Eric did is exciting."
The Steger name is one familiar with Ball State golf.
Steger's father, Scott, played golf at Ball State from 1975-78, was inducted to the BSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988 and earned All-America honors. Steger's mother, Donna, was a member of the BSU women's golf team during the 1980-81 season.
