MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State women's swimming and diving team ended its first weekend of competition with a 153-141 victory over Mid-American Conference rival Bowling Green Saturday afternoon at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-1 (1-1 MAC) on the year, while the Falcons drop to 0-2 (0-2 MAC).
In its second meet in less than 24 hours, Ball State captured wins in seven of the 16 events, including sweeping the top three spots in both diving events.
For the second straight day, sophomore Sara Hostetler (Vincennes, Ind./Jasper H.S.) captured first place in both the 200 backstroke (2:07.48) and the 100 butterfly (58.13), clocking season-best times in both events.
Seniors Mary Ehresman (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) and Lisa Maertin (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way-Central H.S.) were also multi-event winners for the Cardinals on the day. Ehresman won the two longest freestyle events, with times of 10:37.95 in the 1000 freestyle and 5:12.51 in the 500 freestyle. Maertin swept the diving events with a score of 259.12 on the 1-meter board and 277.57 on the 3-meter board.
Sophomore Nicole Saulters (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.) rounded out BSU's event winners with a time of 59.85 in the 100 backstroke.
After Bowling Green started the meet with a victory in the 400 medley relay, it was Ehresman who got the Cardinals in the win column by capturing the meet's longest event (the 1000 freestyle) by almost five-and-a-half seconds.
Following a 1-2 finish by BGSU in the 200 freestyle, Saulters evened the meet at two events apiece with the only sub-minute time of the day in the 100 backstroke.
The Falcons looked to gain momentum by tallying first-place efforts in the next three events, but the Cardinals were able to keep the meet close with a pair of second-place finishes.
Ball State then responded by gaining 16 points on the 1-meter diving board, as it collected the top three spots.
In the ninth event, BGSU earned the win in the 100 freestyle, but a 2-3-4 effort from the Cardinals allowed the Falcons to earn only one point.
Over the next five events, the Cardinals got a pair of wins from Hostetler and victories from both Ehresman and Martin to pull out to a 142-116 advantage. Included in the run was another 1-2-3 effort in 3-meter diving.
Bowling Green would win both of the final events, but it was not enough to move past the Cardinals who earned a 153-141 victory on the day.
The Ball State women's swimming and diving team returns to action Friday, Nov. 6 when it travels to Akron for a 5 p.m. swim versus the Zips. The following day, both the BSU men's and women's squads will battle Buffalo at 1 p.m.
