October 24, 2009 | Field Hockey
The Cardinals were outmatched in almost every statistical category other than the score. The Bears led the Cardinals in shots (19-6), shots on goal (12-4), and penalty corners (14-4) but BSU took advantage of its opportunities to score when they were presented.
Senior Tiffany Shifflett (Yorktown, Va./Hapton Roads Academy) paced the Cardinals defense with nine saves.
The Bears took an early 1-0 lead 6:50 into the game behind a goal from Megan Shamleffer.
Kuhn displayed an all-around effort less than three minutes later coming up with a steal and a score from five yards out leading to a 1-1 stalemate that carried over to halftime.
The sophomore continued her sensational performance in the second half giving BSU its first lead of the game less than two minutes into the second stanza. On a two-to-one breakaway Kuhn was assisted by senior Brooke MacGillivary (North Vancouver, B.C./Carson Graham) for the go-ahead score.
Kuhn extended the BSU lead to 3-1 almost seven minutes into the second half after taking a loose ball and pushing it in for BSU's third unanswered goal.
With under 18 minutes remaining in the game, freshman Leann Carroll (Birdsboro, Pa./Twin Valley) recorded her first career assist, feeding Kuhn for yet another goal, opening the BSU advantage to 4-1.
MSU was able to cut into the Cardinals lead with less than two minutes left off of a penalty shot for the final count of 4-2.
The Cardinals return to Mid-American Conference action next Saturday, Oct. 31, for a 1 p.m. showdown at Ohio.
