Soccer Falls At Akron, 3-0

AKRON, Ohio - The Ball State soccer team dropped its second game of the weekend Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals fell 3-0 to Mid-American Conference foe Akron at Lee Jackson Field. The loss drops the Cardinals to 4-11-0 overall on the year and 2-6-0 in MAC play, while the Zips improve to 6-6-2 overall and 4-3-1 in league action.
The two teams battled back-and-forth during the scoreless first half with the Cardinals owning a 7-5 advantage in shots in the opening frame. The teams were aggressive in the first half as both registered five corner kicks apiece in the first 45 minutes of play.
Akron came out in the second half and took control of the game as the Zips held a 12-6 lead in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks in the second half. Akron opened the scoring in the 60th minute as it converted off of a chance from a free kick. The Zips' Rachel Phillip was able to poke a rebound past BSU freshman goalkeeper Nicole Wood (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) and into the back of the net.
The Zips struck for their second goal just 2:59 later as Phillip tallied her second goal of the contest. Phillip scored the unassisted goal as she beat Wood with a shot into the side netting. Akron tacked on a third goal 73rd minute off of a free kick for the final tally.
Junior forward Missy Gordon (Carmel, Ind./Marshall Univ.) paced the Cardinals' offensively as she recorded a game-high six shots as BSU was out-shot 17-13 in the game. Wood finished the afternoon with five saves in the loss for the Cardinals.
Ball State finally returns home after four straight MAC road games when the Cardinals host Northern Illinois Friday at the BSU Soccer Field at 3 p.m. The Cardinals wrap up the home portion of the 2009 regular season next Sunday afternoon when they host Western Michigan for senior day at 1 p.m.
