SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ? The Ball State field hockey team took Missouri State to the wire Sunday, but fell in overtime 3-2 on the road.
The Bears were the first to attack with a goal by Alyssa Hile. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Missouri State at half time.
Hile would add an assist to begin the second half to Kristen Pettey for the team's second goal of the game.
Sophomore forward Ellen Vonderbrink (Kettering, Ohio/Fairmont) began the comeback for Ball State as she put the Cardinals on the board with her first career goal at the 46:23 mark. Vonderbrink also logged a career-high three shots on goal.
Freshman forward Brittany Hammer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) assisted Vonderbrink's goal and also chipped in a goal of her own just a minute and a half later to tie the game 2-2 in regulation. Hammer now has five goals on the season. Junior forward Brooke MacGillivary (North Vancouver, B.C./Carson Graham) provided the assist on Hammer's goal.
The game remained tied until Melissa Lantz scored the game-winner at the 71:28 mark in overtime. Lantz recorded eight shots on goal for the game and headed into the match as Missouri State's leading scorer with eight goals and four assists.
Junior goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) kept Ball State in the game by improving her game-high saves record to 13, including six in overtime. Shifflett recorded 11 in the previous game against Indiana and has now earned 208 saves for her career.
Missouri State's goalkeeper, Jessica Schuster earned 11 saves. Each team also added one defensive save each on the day.
“Ellen Vonderbrink provided excellent offense today for us,” said head coach Annette Payne. “But we just kept allowing them to get corner after corner, and we could not seem to get the ball out of the circle.”
The Cardinals (1-8) match up with the Ohio Bobcats (4-5) who are undefeated in the first two conference games. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, October 4 to begin a five-game stretch at home.
