MUNCIE, Id. ? The Ball State women's tennis team opened the 2008 fall season Friday afternoon as they hosted the first day of the Ball State Fall Invitational at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. The Invitational consists of eight NCAA Division I teams with four flights of singles with draws of 16 apiece and four flights of doubles with pool play in each flight.
Freshman Hanna Ohman (Pitea, Sweden/Kramfors Tennis Gymnasium) won her first collegiate match over Nicole Miller of Bradley in Flight A singles, 7-5, 6-7, 10-6. Sophomore Georgina Thompson (Sydney, Australia/St. Margaret's) also won her first match of the day as she downed Laina Grote of Dayton, 6-3, 6-4 in Flight A.
Freshman Sarah Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) took home a win in her first collegiate match as she defeated Chelsea Glanker of Dayton, 6-3, 6-3 in Flight B. Senior Rachel Surowiec (LaPorte, Ind./IPFW) advanced to the second round of the Flight C singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Marsha Peresitsky of Wright State.
Freshman Kimberly Robbins (Littleton, Colo./JK Mullen) rounded out the first round winners with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Karlee Miller of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Flight D singles.
Thomson and Hebble won in Flight A doubles by an 8-5 advantage against the Wisconsin-Milwaukee duo of Drvaric and Kastenholz. Ohman teamed with freshman Kylee Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) in Flight B doubles for an 8-1 victory over the Wright State pair of Peresetsky and Capozziello.
The Cardinals also picked up doubles victories in Flight C and Flight D in the first day of the invite. Freshman Dena Boulieris (Lakeforest, Ill./Libertyville) and classmate Kristin McKinney (Muncie, Ind./Delta) picked up an 8-3 victory in Flight C over the Dayton duo of Grote and Mathews. Ball State rounded out the doubles with an 8-1 victory by Surowiec and Robbins against the IUPUI set of Rush and Caputo.
The Cardinals will continue the 2008 Ball State Fall Invitational Saturday morning at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
