
Field Hockey Comes Close Against No. 16 Michigan

MUNCIE, Ind. ? The Ball State field hockey team fell just one goal short of beating No. 16 Michigan in a 4-3 decision Friday at the BSU Turf Field in their home opener.
Michigan (2-3-0) was able to score first in the game, however, freshman midfielder Caitlin Maguire (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy) quickly answered for Ball State for her third career goal on an assist from freshman forward Brittany Hammer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy). Hammer later added a goal of her own, her team-leading fourth of the season.
Sophomore forward Hannah Jones (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual) contributed her first career goal by an assist from junior forward Brooke MacGillivary (North Vancouver, B.C./Carson Graham) to put Ball State ahead 3-2 at half time.
After making a goalkeeper change, the Wolverines would come back in the second half, scoring two more goals, including the game winner by Meridith Way. Way led the team with three shots on goal.
Ball State once again, was able to achieve a better shot percentage than its opponent, connecting on three of three shots on goal, while Michigan scored four of its 14 shots on goal.
Michigan led on corners, six to one, however, senior defender Jodi Mann (Clifton, Va./Centreville) and sophomore defender Elizabeth Blaum (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory) each recorded a defensive save on two of the corners.
Junior goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) recorded six saves for the game.
The Cardinals (1-4-0) will be back in action Sunday, September 14 when they play Saint Louis at 1 p.m. in Muncie, Ind.
