OXFORD, Ohio ? After more than doubling their opponent's shots, the Ball State field hockey team defeated Davidson 2-0 in the final game of the Miami Kick-Off Classic to earn its first victory of the 2008 season.
Senior Jodi Mann (Clifton, Va./Centreville) and freshman forward Brittany Hammer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) provided the scoring, each scoring a goal in the victory. The two combined for six shots on goal as the Cardinals out-shot the Wildcats by an 18-7 advantage. Freshman midfielder Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) and sophomore midfielder Kaitlan Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) each added an assist on the goals for the Cardinals who improve to 1-1 on the season.
Almost half of the Ball State squad recorded at least 1 shot for the Cardinals.
“We were able to make the right adjustments as a team and were able to get the win,” head coach Annette Payne said. “We worked the ball from the back field to the front, which allowed us to find more scoring opportunities.”
Junior goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) recorded her second career shutout with five saves in the game.
Davidson (0-2) was led by freshman forward Christine Rau with two shots on goal. The Cardinals' defense held Davidson to just a third of its opponents shot from the previous match against Richmond.
Ball State will play its next game against Towson University in Maryland on Friday September 5 at 1 p.m.
