MUNCIE, Ind. ? Ball State baseball head coach Greg Beals announced on Friday the signing of Andrew DeYoung (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) to a national letter of intent.
“Andrew is a great addition to the Ball State baseball family,” Beals said. “He is a tall, rangy shortstop who has the potential to grow into a great player. His best baseball is still ahead of him and we are excited to work with him as he develops his game. He also brings an outstanding academic record to our program as a recipient of a presidential scholarship.”
DeYoung, a 6-foot-3 shortstop, was a four-year letterwinner at Hanover Central High School under head coach Jim Nohos. He earned First Team All-Area honors as a senior as he was named the team's Most Valuable Player. He posted a .456 batting average with 30 runs scored, 20 RBI and 35 stolen bases.
DeYoung, a three-time All-Porter Conference First Team selection, was named the 2008 Conference Mental Attitude Award winner. He also earned a presidential scholarship from Ball State. He played summer baseball for the Hammond Chiefs.
DeYoung is the eighth player to sign with Ball State for the 2009 season, joining Tim Issler who signed earlier this summer and six others who signed with the Cardinals during the early period last November.
