Men's Golf Announces Awards; Cosat Academic All-MAC

In addition, Ross Cosat (Carthage, Ind./Knightstown H.S.) was named the team's Most Improved Player and was named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. Maurer and Matt Schumaker (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City H.S.) were also recognized as the Ball State Team Captains for the 2007-08 season.
The Ball State MVP Award is named in honor of Travis Smith, who was a freshman member of the golf team in 2006-07 and was tragically killed in an auto accident in January of his first year at Ball State.
Maurer led the Cardinals with a 74.13 stroke average in 38 competitive rounds. He managed nine top-25 finishes this past season, including three top-10 showings for Ball State. Maurer tallied a season best ninth-place finish at Ball State's Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational. He tied for 14th at the MAC Championships to help the Cardinals to a third-place finish.
Rhodes, who was a junior at Ball State but in his first season as a member of the men's golf team, was second on the team with a 74.87 average in 38 competitive rounds. He tallied five top-25 finishes last season, including a tie for 10th at the MAC Championships.
Cosat managed a 75.03 golf average while maintaining a 3.40 grade-point average on Ball State's 4.0 scale as a business major. Cosat tied for 10th at the MAC Championships and posted a career low 65 at the Yestingsmeier Invitational. He had five top-25 finishes, including a season-best ninth place showing at the Yestingsmeier Invitational.
Schumaker was a junior member of the golf team and tallied a 74.88 average in 24 competitive rounds. He posted a career low 68 at the Yestingsmeier Invitational where he managed a season-best 10th place finish. Schumaker also had top-25 showings at the Belmont Fall Shootout (22nd tie) and the Indiana/Wolf Run Intercollegiate (24th tie).
Ball State will open the fall portion of its 2008-09 schedule Aug. 31, at the Rutherford Intercollegiate in Farmington, Pa., hosted by Penn State. Ball State will host the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational Sept. 22-23, at Delaware Country Club in Muncie.
