MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State field hockey program has signed seven players to National Letters of Intent, according to fifth-year head coach Annette Payne.
For the 2008 season, the Cardinals will welcome Kristen Falk (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen H.S.), Brittany Hammer (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), CJ Hermes (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy), Devanny Kuhn (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy), Chelsea Mitchell (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico H.S.), Katie Norris (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) and Rachel Shulhafer (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual H.S.).
"This group of players is going to be very special," Payne said. "They are all very talented individually, and together they have the capability of making a huge impact. We have players from all over coming to Ball State, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome them into the family as part of our team."
Kristen Falk led her Upper Perkiomen team to league championships and Pennsylvania state tournament appearances in 2005 and 2006. She has been a member of the Pennsylvania Futures Program and has participated in the National Field Hockey Festival. Falk played indoor field hockey for the High Styx club team.
Brittany Hammer earned All-Metro and All-Conference First Team honors at St. Joseph's Academy in St. Louis. As a junior, Hammer led her team with 12 assists and 34 total points. She also finished second on her squad with 11 goals. Hammer has been a part of the USA Field Hockey Futures program and has played club field hockey for Team Gateway St. Louis.
CJ Hermes was a team captain and an All-County selection at Mercy Academy in Louisville. In 2007, she earned a spot on the Kentucky Select Second Team. As a member of the International Field Hockey Club of Kentucky, Hermes participated in the Field Hockey Festival. She also played club field hockey for the Kentucky Field Hockey Association.
Devanny Kuhn was named Miss Field Hockey of Kentucky in 2007 as a member of her Sacred Heart team in Louisville. An All-State and All-District selection during her high school career, Kuhn was a member of Sacred Heart's state championship teams in 2006 and 2007. She also earned a spot on the Kentucky All-Select Team.
Chelsea Mitchell was a captain for her Cocalico High School team. She also helped her X-Calibur club team to a gold medal at last year's National Indoor Tournament. Mitchell has been a part of gold and silver medal-winning teams at the Keystone Winter Games. She is the sister of current Ball State player Kaitlan Mitchell, who was a freshman for the Cardinals last fall.
Katie Norris was a team captain at Mercy Academy in Louisville, where she teamed with fellow Ball State recruit CJ Hermes. In 2007, she was named to the All-District Team, the Kentucky Select First Team, the All-State Tournament Second Team and the All-Apple Tournament Team. Norris has also participated in the National Field Hockey Festival as a member of the International Field Hockey Club of Kentucky and the Kentucky Field Hockey Association. As part of the Futures program, she has also competed in the National Futures Championships.
Rachel Shulhafer played high school field hockey at Dupont Manual High School in Louisville, the same high school that produced current Ball State player Hannah Jones. Shulhafer has also played club field hockey for the Kentucky Field Hockey Association and the International Field Hockey Club of Kentucky.
