Softball Defeats Lipscomb 6-2

Chattanooga, Tenn. ? The Ball State softball team started the Panera Bread Tournament 1-0 after defeating the Lipscomb Lady Bison 6-2.

The Cardinals were scheduled for two games, but the Bradley Braves were unable to travel due to the weather conditions in Peoria, Illinois.

Ball State took the lead in the third inning, after trailing 1-0. Allie Pennock and Alicia Barkley each hit a single to get things started for BSU.

Abby Gross hit a double to right field that allowed Pennock to score and moved Barkley to third.

Elizabeth Milian laid down a sacrifice bunt to allow Barkley to score. Milian reached first base on the fielder's choice and Gross advanced to third.

Freshman Cassi Olp entered the game to pinch run for Milian. The Cardinals executed a double steal that sent Olp to second and Gross home making the score 3-1.

The Cardinals increased their lead in the fourth inning with some aggressive base running.

Alyssa Collins led off the inning with a single, and then stole second base with Jen Moore at the plate. Moore delivered a single moving Collins to third. This gave BSU the opportunity to call another double steal.

Moore made the move to second while Collins reached home safely. Moore and Pennock each scored off Lipscomb errors making the game 6-1.

Lipscomb got one run back in the fifth inning, but they were unable to come back as Ball State improved to 2-4 on the season. Collins went 2-3 to lead BSU.

The Cardinals will play Eastern Kentucky on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. They finish the day with a match-up against East Tennessee State at 6:45 p.m.
