
Swimming & Diving Sweeps House Of Champions Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - - Both the Ball State men's and women's swimming & diving squads took first place in the 2008 House of Champions Invitational hosted by IUPUI. During the two-day event, the Cardinals captured the top spot in 14 of the 40 events.
The BSU women's squad finished the two-day event with 8044 points, followed by Wisconsin-Green Bay (7810), Indianapolis (6405), Eastern Illinois (5887), Western Illinois (5362), IUPUI (4586) and Butler (2921).
The Ball State men's team finished the two-day event with 7993 points, followed by Indianapolis (7032), Wisconsin-Green Bay (6906), Eastern Illinois (5866), Western Illinois (5715) and IUPUI (4683).
During the second day of competition, Mary Ehresman was BSU's top individual performer, taking home first in both the 400 IM (4:34.84) and 1650 freestyle (17:46.10), while helping guide the 800 freestyle relay squad (Maria Gramelspacher, Elizabeth Spilman, Katie Bylsma and Ehresman) to a first-place clocking of 7:49.52.
Lauren Harger (100 Breaststroke - 1:06.38), Bylsma (100 Freestyle - 53.31), Emily Haifley (200 Breaststroke - 2:22.69) and Megan Ploetz (200 Butterfly - 2:08.83) also scored individual event wins to help the women top the other six teams at the meet.
BSU's women team concluded the meet with the top time in the 400 freestyle, as Nicole Saulters, Andrea Campeau, Gramelspacher and Bylsma combined for a time of 3:34.03.
In addition the top times, Lisa Maertin placed second on the three-meter diving board with a score of 282.00, which was an NCAA Zone Diving Qualifying mark. Earlier this season, Maertin recorded a 1-meter NCAA Zone Diving Qualifying mark versus Akron (Nov. 7).
On the men's side, Jordan Rantz picked up the Cardinals first individual victory of the day, posting a 100 breaststroke time of 58.83.
Adam Dale added a winning effort in the 200 backstroke (1:52.41), while Ben Battjes posted his second individual victory in the invitational by placing first in the 100 freestyle (46.25).
Rounding out BSU's event victories were Mark Augustyn, Andrew Hostetler, Kyle Hembree and Ben Karwoski with a clocking of 7:03.38 in the 800 freestyle relay.
Both the men's and women's squads return to action Saturday, Dec. 13 when they travel to East Lansing to face Michigan State, the alma mater of co-head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill.

MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Both the Ball State men's and women's swimming & diving teams return to action this weekend when they head to Indianapolis for the 2008 House of Champions Invitational hosted by IUPUI. The two-day event kicks off Friday at 6:30 p.m., while Saturday will feature two sessions, beginning at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
In addition to the Cardinals and the host Jaguars, Butler, Eastern Illinois, Indianapolis, Western Illinois and Wisconsin-Green Bay will compete in the invitational.
Last season, the Cardinals swept the invitational with the women scoring 795 points to top seven other teams, while the men tallied 783 points to defeat five other teams.
On the women's side, the Cardinals return three individual event winners from last season. (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way-Central H.S.) captured first place in both diving events, scoring 240.55 on the 1-meter board and 232.70 on the 3-meter board. (Lafayette, Ind./Jefferson H.S.) took first in both the 400 IM (4:33.52) and 1650 freestyle (17:28.76), while (Avon, Ind./Avon H.S.) won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.20).Lauren HargerMary EhresmanLisa Maertin
