
Swimming & Diving Swept By Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - - Despite some strong individual performances, both the Ball State men's and women's swimming & diving teams suffered setbacks Saturday afternoon to Michigan State at McCaffree Pool.
On the men's side, the Cardinals scored four individual victories and a pair of relay wins in a 142.5-157.5 loss.
Chris Krupa was the men's top performer, sweeping the butterfly event with a times of 1:54.45 (200 butterfly) and 52.23 (100 butterfly), while combining with Adam Thieling, Gavin McNeeley and Austin Laska to win the 200 medley relay with a clocking of 1:35.89.
Laska also took home top honors in the 50 free (21.08), while joining Ben Battjes, Josh Young and Zach Coquillard to win the 200 freestyle relay with a combined effort of 1:25.01.
Rounding out the men's individual winners was Andrew Hostetler, who took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:43.76.
On the women's side, the Cardinals suffered a 138-158 setback despite winning seven individual events.
Emily Haifley was BSU's top female swimmer, capturing first in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.24) and the 200 breaststroke (2:23.01).
Mary Ehresman joined Haifley in the win column, posting a time of 10:35.97 to win the 1000 freestyle, while Maria Gramelspacher clocked in at 1:57.62 to take first in the 200 freestyle.
Katie Bylsma won the 50 freestyle (24.84), while Alanna Bader placed first in the 100 butterfly (58.32) and Erika Paul took the top spot in the 200 IM (2:11.70).
The Ball State swimming & diving team will take a few weeks off before heading to Ft. Pierce, Florida for its winter training trip from Jan. 1-10.

MEET PREVIEW
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Both the Ball State men's and women's swimming & diving teams return to action Saturday, when they compete in a dual meet with Michigan State starting at 2 p.m.
Entering the meet, the men's team has at least one individual ranked in the top five in the Mid-American Conference in each event this season, while the women have at least one student-athlete ranked in the top 15 in 12 of the 16 events.
In last season's meeting between the two programs at the Lewellen Aquatic Center, the MSU men's squad scored a 149-94 victory over BSU, while the Spartan's women's squad tallied a 136-107 victory over the Cardinals.
In last year's meeting, the men's squad scored victories in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle Relay, while Ben Battjes claimed the 50 freestyle title with a time of 19.91. The women saw Maria Gramelspacher (200 freestyle, 1:55.00), Katie Bylsma (50 freestyle, 24.73) and Megan Ploetz (200 butterfly, 2:08.35) score individual wins.
Saturday's meet also sees BSU co-head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill return to her alma mater. A 1976 graduate of Michigan State, Seibold-Caudill was a three-time national finalist in 1-meter and 3-meter diving for the Spartans. She was honored as an All-American for her efforts in 1973, 1974 and 1975.
