MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State junior swimmer Jordan Rantz (Leesburg, Ind./Wawasee H.S.) has been named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of Dec. 1-7, as announced today by the league office.
“Jordan turned in the best meet of his two-and-a-half years with the program at the IUPUI House of Champions Invitational,” said Ball State co-head coach Bob Thomas. “I am as pleased as I can be for him. This is a fitting award for both his academic and athletic achievements.”
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Rantz, a sport administration major with a 3.61 grade-point average, helped guide the Ball State men's swimming & diving team to first-place at the six-team 2008 House of Champions Invitational (Dec. 5-6) hosted by IUPUI. In the two-day meet, Rantz took home top honors in the 100 breaststroke with a career-fast time of 58.83, which was the fastest time to that date in the MAC this season.
He also turned in a career-fast time of 2:11.05 in the 200 breaststroke to place fourth overall, while swimming the second leg for both the 200 medley relay (1:35.80) and 400 medley relay (3:30.99) squads which swam to second-place finishes. He also participated in the 200 IM (2:06.47).
